This condensed version of the Tower Mountain Character Guide gives a brief description of most of the important characters in the Tower up to the Third Millennium. There is also a separate section on Old Settlement characters . These lists do not cover human characters, troll characters, preserver characters, or characters from other tribes, though these may be included in future expansions.

We will be adding the full CISes a few at a time, so not all of the links will work for a while yet.

Lord Tyaar:   (tie-ar or tie-ar)  M, H - golden blond, E - ice blue.  Son of Isilien and Ketsal (both D), brother of Meiron (D).  R mate of Lady Tascha, father of Wisprian (D); also father of  Chenir out of Recognition.  Soulbrother to Beliel.  Healer/antihealer/flesh-shaper, at high levels, and a strong sender.  Founder and undisputed Lord of Tower Mountain.  Cool, cruel, beautiful-but-deadly; conceals his darker nature under a mask of civilized charm.  Almost sane (although his insanity is progressive, and gradually worsens over the centuries).  An excellent actor when necessary; possesses a great deal of personal magnetism.  Jealous of his power over
others, will quickly eliminate anything he sees as a threat to it.  Protective of whatever or whoever he considers "his," and will allow no one else to harm them.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit Lord or the Great Spirit.
Fourth Millennium:  Tyaar dies at the end of  TWR 1178, leaving behind a son out of Recognition, Sunhawk, and a daughter of the spirit, Snowflower. Clearence:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs

Declared

Ayla :  (ay-lah)  F, H - wheaten blond, E - china blue.  Declared hawkrider. Daughter of Zareth (Fu) and Gyaen (D), sister of Malra.  (Actually half-sister, but the fact that Gyaen is not Malra's blood father is not known by the elves.) Hawkmaster since Tanyel left the Tower during Twillor's Escape (TWR 1087).  Former close friend and agemate of Doleera, former lovemate of Foi.  Glider, bonded to Talon; also has a mated pair of falcons, Him and Her.  Calm, easygoing, respectful to those  who merit it.  Not one to speak out unless strongly moved.  Attentive, alert, highly honest.  Self-assured, trustworthy, loyal  to a fault.
Fourth Millennium:  After Tanyel returns to the Tower to take up the Hawkmaster's duties again, Ayla is given the position of Assistant Flight Leader under Silara, and also continues to act as Hawkmaster when Tanyel is away from the Tower; she becomes full-time Hawkmaster again when Tanyel leaves the post c. TWR 1480.  She Recognizes Jheredd in TWR 1279. Clearence:  Terrie Smith

Beliel:   (beh-leel)  M, H - dark brown, E - brown.  Declared.  Son of Meroe (D) and Khepri (Fu), elder brother of Serggyon (Fu) and Kiriel; R mate of Liera (D), father of Tegwar (Ms), Cylan, and Piri.  Soulbrother of Lord Tyaar.   Powerful rockshaper.  Lord Tyaar's second in command.  An opportunist, shrewd, sly, a schemer, a good actor.  Restless, boundlessly energetic.  Confident to the point of overconfidence.  Vain.  Downright vicious if thwarted, capable of  holding a grudge for centuries.  Addicted to power.  Very fond of the physical pleasures, not neglecting their darker side.  An extremely dangerous enemy.   Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Justice (isn't that a scary thought?)
Fourth Millennium:  After the fall of Tyaar, Beliel rules the Tower for a short period (fall TWR 1178 - spring TWR 1179).  He is then removed from power and exiled, along with several companions.  These Exiles later found a conclave of their own in the Hidden Valley, whereupon Beliel settles down to seriously plot revenge. Clearence:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs

Ceyte :  (kee-tah)  F, H - red/auburn, E - amber.  Declared.  Daughter of Shaihr (Ms) and Daemor (D), elder sister of Spago; R to Synf (D), mother of Sarafel (D).  Minor glider, enhanced hearing.  A musician, poet, and composer who hears music in every sound, a dabbler in many crafts.  An eternal optimist/Pollyanna, well aware of the Tower's darkness but determined not to let it get her down for long.  Graceful; a natural mimic.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Wine and Song.
Fourth Millennium:  Ceyte makes periodic visits to New Hope for "inspiration";  after one of these visits (TWR 1229) she returns with an apprentice, Feather  and Seahawk's daughter Livvy (aka Beesweets).  She also lovemates with Doreel and they have a daughter, Collya. Clearence:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs

Fourth Millennium:  In the early years of the Fourth Millennium, Chimreh and Jand plot to assassinate Lord Erik.  The plot fails, and Chimreh is exiled from the Tower.  She is offered and eventually accepts a place at New Hope. Clearence:  Kathy R. Coleman

Dijin:   (dih-jin)  M, H - bright red-gold, E - pale red-brown.  Son of Valkirah and Clayven (both D) out of Recognition, half-brother of Reevirah, Gyaen (D), Cuendee (Ms), and Kela.  Declared hawkrider.  Glider, bonded to Fireflyte.  Strong sender.  Mute.  Rudimentary engineer; enjoys inventing and tinkering.  Delights in his own self-control.  Stubborn as a mule.  Keeps a low profile, non-political.  Lonely, yet reclusive.  Known to the Mraal as the Silent One.
Fourth Millennium:  No significant changes noted. Clearence:  Susan Woolard

Doleera :  (doh-leer-ah)  F, H - rust red, E - dark emerald green.  Declared hawkrider.  Daughter of Silara (Ms) and Lyris (D).  Powerful glider, bonded to  Redcrest.  Flight leader of the Declared after the exile of Twillor (TWR  1087).  Ambitious.  Easily underestimated.  A born leader and an equally born  actress.  Confident in her beauty, not overly vain.  Has a well-defined  superiority complex.  Totally devoted to the pleasures of the flesh,  especially joining.  Has no current rival as a hawkrider; her only one in the  past was Twillor.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Pleasure.
Fourth Millennium:  Exiled along with Beliel; co-founder of the enclave in the  Hidden Valley. Clearence:  Dale Beaver

Eylar :  (ay-lahr)  M, H - black, E - light green.  Declared, cadet-master and  trainer of the hawkriders.  Son of Kyrie and Mathon (both D), elder brother of  Davrille, half-brother of Tajal.  R lifemate of Vayree, father of Nalkor and  Vallaree.  Glider, bonded to Glimfeather. Hunter/tracker/scout, minor  leatherworker, excellent organizer with a head for detail.  Loyal, stubborn,  unimaginative, a staunch traditionalist. Not cruel by nature but tends to  follow orders unquestioningly.  Has a strong sense of justice, and of right  and wrong.  In charge of discipline and duty rosters for the hawkriders; a bit  of a martinet.  Rather straitlaced and exclusively devoted to his lifemate.   Known to the Mraal as the Stern Hawk Spirit, the Spirit of Discipline and  Rectitude, and the Mother's Mate.
Fourth Millennium: Appointed to the Lord's Council by Shadaln; not known if this appointment continues after Shadaln's resignation. Clearence:  Margaret Dean

Jand:   (as it's spelled, with short a)  M, H - black, E - dark brown.  Declared hawkrider.  Originally one of the Windwalkers tribe, but accepted/adopted by the original Tower Mountain settlers during their migration.  Glider, strong sender, bonded (recently) to Goldtalon.  Skilled jeweler.  Very egocentric in a self-absorbed rather than self-important manner.  Tends to address/refer to everyone as "beloved" (Tyaar is "Lord Beloved").  Very skilled with dagger.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Baubles.
Fourth Millennium:  After the failure of his and Chimreh's attempt to assassinate Lord Erik (mostly because Jand wanted to fail; after Tyaar's death/"desertion" he borders on the suicidal), Jand is offered and accepts a place at New Hope. Clearence:  Gene Breshears

Jheredd:   (zheh-reth, with a soft th)  M, H - white-blond with darker streaks,  E - right blue-grey, left hazel.  Declared hawkrider.  Son of Ahrien (Fu) and  Helkar (D), younger brother of Valimar.  Glider, deep-senser (concealed).   Makes lace as a hobby and for trade.  Has an intense dislike of being touched.   Projects the image of an unthreatening fop; wants to be underestimated.  In  truth, proud, aloof, arrogant, stubborn, and a superb intriguer/player of  mind-games.
Fourth Millennium:  At the beginning of the Fourth Millennium, Jheredd is sent  out on a mission to find Meiji.  He succeeds, and returns in TWR 1195 with  Meiji and a preserver companion. Clearence:  Mercy Neumark

Fourth Millennium:  Jilleen originally goes with the New Hope colonists, but in TWR 1203 she returns to the Tower along with Sharai and Xylene.  She also Recognizes Thorn, an Outsider; and has a daughter, Lohren. Clearence:  Terrie Smith

Kesik:   (kess-ik)  M, H - deep blond, E - blue.  Declared.  Son of Lariel(D) and Razmak, younger brother of Feyhr; R mate of Xylene (Fu), father of Emerel and Kaethe.  Currently lovemated to Davrille.  Shadaln's lieutenant (Castellan), directly responsible for the day-to-day domestic workings of the Tower.  Easygoing, somewhat weak-willed when it comes to his own kind.  Very loyal to Lord Tyaar.  One to fit quietly in with the crowd.  A good soldier,  follows orders, rarely displays much initiative on his own.  Likes to be  appreciated.  A sweet and considerate lover.  Practical. Known to the Mraal  as His Voice's Hands.
Fourth Millennium:  When Shadaln becomes co-ruler with Erik, Kesik is promoted  to Seneschal of the Tower, and has a seat on the Lord's Council.  It is not yet known if Erik retains him on the Council after Shadaln's resignation. Clearence: Kirstin Fontaine

Kiriel:   (keer-ee-el)  F, H - jet black, E - kelly green.  Declared hawkrider.   Daughter of Meroe (D) and Khepri (Fu), younger sister of Serggyon (Fu) and  Beliel.  Glider, bonded to Sharptalon.  Seductive, sensual, flirtatious but  selective.  Feline in nature.  Devious and sly when "up to something," anger  burns coldly.  Likes a challenge.  A follower rather than a ringleader.   Literally has no idea elves live any other way than "the way it's done" in  Tower Mountain.  Known to the Mraal as the Little Hawk Born of Stone, Little Hawk Sister.
Fourth Millennium:  Kiriel Recognizes Kela and lifemates with Frith; initially at New Hope, they move back to the Tower in their third summer, being unable to face the spiders (Kiriel) and the allergies (Frith). Clearence:  Liz Roth

Malra:  (mawl-rah)  M, H - mouse brown, E - brown.  Declared hawkrider. Son of Zareth (Fu) and Gyaen (D), brother of Ayla.  Glider, bonded to Skysoarer.   The classic "party animal," always out for a good time. Hyperactive, superficial, a bit of a jerk.  Known to stretch the truth when bragging about self; the other Declared allow him his fancies and snigger behind his back.   Always ready to try something new, always up for new experiences.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Chaos.
Fourth Millennium:  No significant changes noted. Clearence:  Teri Gardner

Mikail:   (mih-kayl)  M, H - brown-blond, E - ice blue.  Declared.  Son of Natalya and Meiron (both D), half brother of Piet, nephew of Lord Tyaar.  Soulbrother to Nalkor.  The greatest dancer and choreographer of the Tower elves.  A stringent perfectionist, impatient, one to set himself incredible standards.  Effusive, humorous, moody, fast-witted; a quicksilver personality.   His mind generally races far ahead of his speech.  Discovers his healer's Talent in TWR 581 but has revealed it to no one.  (All right, a couple of people discovered it on their own . . .)  Known to the Mraal as the Dancer.
Fourth Millennium:  Mikail leaves the Tower in TWR 1178 with the escaping Outsiders from Great Water Holt; later, at Wolfgang, he Recognizes Shadow-Wise.  After the overthrow of Beliel, he is one of the prime movers behind the  New Hope colony, and relocates there.  He and Shadow-Wise have a son, Mischa.  After about 50 years, however, he makes an extended visit (oh, say, a century) to the Tower to practice his art. Clearence:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs / Margaret Dean

Mindar :  (min-dar)  M, H - jet black, E - sapphire blue.  Declared.  Son of Nennali and Merek (both Ms / presumed D), younger brother of Peysol; father of Ailinn out of Recognition.  Weapons expert, particularly with the sword, and teacher.  Does metal sculpting as a hobby.  Completely devoted to the ideal of Tower Mountain, though not particularly to Tyaar.  A rabid traditionalist, very honest.  Tends to rationalize the changes in the Tower.  Friendly with the trolls.  Known to the Mraal as the Weapons Master and the Dark Brother.
Fourth Millennium:  Mindar divides his time between the Tower and New Hope as  teacher of weaponry. Clearence:  Dale Beaver

Nalkor :  (nal-kor)  M, H - dark brown, E - dark brown.  Declared hawkrider. Son of Vayree and Eylar, elder brother of Vallaree.  Soulbrother to Mikail.   Glider, bonded to Highscreech.  Known for his gliding and tracking skills;  probably the most adept glider in the Tower.  Quiet and good-natured, with an  unobtrusive wit and a strong element of romanticism in his nature.  A follower  rather than a leader, but with a strong sense of right and wrong inherited  from both parents.  A good teacher.  Known to the Mraal as the Young Scout.
Fourth Millennium:  Nalkor goes with Mikail when he leaves the Tower in TWR 1178.  He too Recognizes a Wolfgang female, Coolbreath (their daughter is Stillmorn), and settles in New Hope.
Clearence:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs / Margaret Dean

Peysol :  (pay-zohl)  M, H - white-blond, E - brilliant blue.  Declared. Son  of Nennali and Merek (both Ms / presumed D), elder brother of Mindar; R mate of Sharai (separated), father of Frith and Winken. Lovemate of Leravie. A genius at costume design and thus one of the most popular elves in the Tower.  Mikail's wardrobe master, stage manager, and member of the dance troupe.  Designs clothing for other Tower elves from Lord Tyaar on down. Cheerful, outgoing, a people person. Welcomes a challenge. "Effect is everything."  Known to the Mraal as the Wardrobe Master, the Dancer's Hands, or the Bright Brother.
Fourth Millennium: Peysol lifemates with Leravie and relocates to New Hope. Clearence: Margaret Dean

Rahirah : (rah-heer-ah) F, H - wheaten blond, E - green with gold flecks. Declared hawkrider. Daughter of Reevirah and Taywar (D), younger sister of Vaynyar. Glider, bonded to Windshear. Considered one of Tyaar's strongest supporters. Herbalist, very skilled birdrider (has an uncanny rapport with all the Tower hawks, not just her own), skilled at woodscraft.  Before her father's death, cheerful, enthusiastic, friendly and adventurous; afterwards reserved and outwardly emotionless. Tries to pretend that everything is all right in the Tower; has chosen quiet obscurity for herself rather than face the reality of her people's decay. Keeps aloof from the various intrigues. Known to the Mraal as Little Hawk Spirit.
Fourth Millennium: After Recognizing Tanyel in TWR 1179, Rahirah relocates to New Hope, where her daughter Frodis and later her son Shahn are born, and lovemates with Piet. Clearence: Unadoptable NPC

Shadaln : (shad-ah-lin) F, H - blond, E - brown. Declared. Daughter of Mithiel and Mallorn (both D), sister of Quixol, half-sister of Razmak, Tanyel, and Felimath; R mate of Dekan (Fu), mother of Leravie. Cousin of Lord Tyaar. The seneschal of Tower Mountain, answering only to her lord; responsible not only for fulfilling his orders but for the human workers.  Considers loyalty equal to honor, and blood loyalty even deeper.  Quiet and somewhat reclusive. A perfectionist and highly organized by nature. A skilled embroiderer, renowned for the intricacy of her abstract designs.  Known to the Mraal as His Voice.
Fourth Millennium: Shadaln is tapped as co-ruler of the Tower along with Erik; she accepts more out of a sense of duty than because she really wants the job. She resigns as co-Lord after the Hidden Valley's attack on the Tower, and relocates to New Hope. Clearence: Gene Breshears

Silara : (sil-ar-ah) F, H - strawberry blond, E - emerald green. Declared hawkrider. Sister of Shaihr (Ms) and Iamoriel, half-sister of Nez; R mate of Lyris (D), mother of Doleera. Formerly a close friend of Shadaln and Ceyte.  Strong glider, levitator, animal bonder. Weapons mistress, played percussion instruments. Liked gambling and winemaking. Confident and self-assured without being overbearing; proud, almost arrogant manner, cool and distant but not unfriendly. Shrewd; not overtly manipulative, but knows what she wants and will get it. Creative, capable, intelligent, a quick learner; dependable and cool-headed. Involved in Twillor's escape along with her lifemate; her hawk was shot down and she was presumed to have died with him.
Fourth Millennium: Silara returns, having plotted to storm the Tower all this time. Unfortunately, she turns up in TWR 1179 (along with her Outsider allies, the Brightcolor elves) after all the excitement is over and Beliel has already been ousted. Nevertheless she settles back into Tower life and becomes the Tower's new flight leader. In her travels she has also met and Recognized Avensyn, an elf from the Hidden Valley; their daughter is Ninvi. Clearence: Annette Pschirrer

Tanyel : (tahn-yel) M, H - red-gold, E - sapphire blue. Declared.  Brother of Razmak and Felimath. Original tamer of the great hawks and the first hawkmaster of the Tower. Loves to push the limits of anything, including his own skills and Tyaar's patience. Impetuous, but self-controlled. Enjoys the Tower's pleasures to the fullest as long as they don't interfere with his care of the hawks. Likes to know what makes people tick. Left the Tower during Twillor's escape; his bird was shot down and he was presumed to have died.  Known to the Mraal as the Hawkmaster.
Fourth Millennium: Tanyel returns to the Tower and Recognizes Rahirah, though they do not lifemate; their children are Frodis and Shahn. After the Crisis is over, Tanyel resumes his duties as hawkmaster, sharing the post with Ayla-- though how long this uncomfortable arrangement will last is a matter for debate. Clearence:

Vayree : (vie-ree) F, H - chestnut brown, E - brown. Declared. Daughter of Serind and Tor (both D), elder sister of Taywar (D); R lifemate of Eylar, mother of Nalkor and Vallaree. Superb weaver, proficient at all textile arts.  Gentle, patient, serene and wise. A good listener and observer. The changes in the Tower and its lord grieve her; she does not see that anything can be done about them, but they have influenced her tapestry work. One of the few people trusted with the secret of Mijo's existence. Fond of humans and has her own cult of helpers and
apprentices. Known to the Mraal as the Weaver or the Serene Mother.
Fourth Millennium: Appointed to the Lord's Council by Shadaln.  Unknown if this appointment lasts beyond Shadaln's resignation. Clearence: Margaret Dean

Non-Declared

Adaarah : (ah-dah-rah) F, H - deep auburn, E - green/hazel. Out-of-Recognition daughter of Nyessti (D) and Nez. Limited glider. Glassmaker, whose creations tend more toward the decorative than the functional; former dancer; gamer. Limps in the right leg due to "phantom pain" from an old injury. Talkative, tends to ramble when she's on a topic she enjoys. Very social, but needs to withdraw from society at times. Sexually adventurous; casual about sex, but has taken lovemates before.  Known to the Mraal as the Glass Spinner, the Sufferer or the Limping One.
Fourth Millennium: Adaarah relocates to Great Water Holt. Clearence: Tower NPC, not adoptable

Adiana : (ah-dee-ah-nah) F, H - jet black with white streak, E - very dark brown. Weak glider, powerful metalshaper though she displays only a mild talent in public. Glassmaker, skilled with poisons, secretly practices hand-to-hand combat. Amoral to the core. Does not like or dislike anyone except Beliel, who is her obsession; all others are pawns to be used or discarded. Desires to become Declared but so far has been denied that privilege.
Fourth Millennium: After a brief moment of glory as Declared under Beliel's rule of the Tower, Adiana follows him into exile and ends up in the Hidden Valley. She later becomes disenchanted with Beliel and strikes off on her own. Clearence: Joyce Norton

Ahrien (aka Flame): (ah-ree-en) F, H - light auburn, E - pale gold.  Daughter of Challa and Sehr (both D), sister of Argus (Ms), Byern (Fu) and Azheri; R mate of Helkar (D), mother of Valimar and Jheredd. Firemaker. Shy, sweet- natured, loved the dance but could never bring herself to perform; worked backstage for the dance troupe. Did ceramics. Horrified by an incident in which she used her Talent to immolate an attacking group of Outsider humans, she begged Lord Tyaar to help her find a way to ensure that such a thing would never happen again. A bit taken aback himself by her display of raw power, Tyaar was more than happy to oblige. Ahrien is Functional from TWR 10 to TWR 1178, and stationed in the Feast Hall, where she controls the lighting both for day-to-day use of the Hall and for theatrical performances there. Known to the Mraal as His Wrath.
Fourth Millennium: Once restored to awareness, Ahrien decides to relocate to New Hope. In TWR 1222, however, following the death of Wyn, she and Havrin lovemate and return to the Tower. Clearence: Joyce Norton

Ailinn : (eye-lin) F, H - dark red, E - slate grey. Daughter of Evanda and Mindar out of Recognition. Glider, weak rockshaper. Fencer, archer, musician; sculptor in wood, glass, and clay. Stargazer, makes kites. Lives in apartments high in the Tower. Has learned from the stars and elements that change is the principle by which the world operates, thus finds the whole premise of the Tower absurd; but loves too many of the individual inhabitants to wish to leave it. Likes to be with others; good hostess and excellent masseuse.
Fourth Millennium: TBD  Clearence: Stacy Lucas

Azheri (aka Azi): (ah-zhe-ree) M, H - white, E - blue. Son of Challa and Sehr, brother of Argus (Ms), Ahrien (Fu), and Byern (Fu); sire of Vriana. Glider. A skilled embroiderer, dancer, sculptor; appreciator of the arts. One of the "bad boys" of the dance troupe. Witty, a good conversationalist.  Has developed a sometimes cruel and often political sense of humor, which he has learned to "almost say" through embroidered art and clothing. Interested in humans and often sculpts them; finds them eerily beautiful but is terrified by their mortality. Known to the Mraal as the Greater Moon Spirit.
Fourth Millennium:  Dies in TWR 1179 when Beliel shapes him into a stone wall after an argument; Azheri suffocates before being rescued.  Clearence: Created by Becky Slocombe; Unadoptable NPC

Ban : (bahn) M, H - red-gold, E - brown. Son of Baz (D) and Jilleen, nephew and soulbrother of Widget. Powerful sender (possibly the most skilled in the Tower after Tyaar), but a weak glider. Jeweler. A sweet, unassuming, careless soul, gentle by nature and respectful of authority.  Burdened by the terrible oppression he feels in the Tower, somewhat careless of his own life but very protective of Widget's.
Fourth Millennium: Ban improves his gliding talent to average, becomes a hawkrider under Lord Erik and lovemates with Valimar. Clearence: Terrie Smith

Basile (aka Door): (bah-zeel) F, H - honey blond, E - grey. Daughter of Nyessti out of Recognition; father uncertain but believed to be Mikail. Rockshaper. Embroiderer, sculptor, dabbled in other textile arts. Nuts about Beliel from girlhood. Bright, curious without being too obtrusive, extremely shy in uncertain situations, but once she is more familiar with a situation or person, she becomes gregarious and, with males, can be bit of a tease. Extremely loyal and stubborn. She tends to take things at face value since she is not one to pry into situations. This can colour her perception about reality. That being so, it wasn't hard for Beliel to convince her to become his own personal Door (though at the time she wasn't completely aware of what she was getting into). Stationed in Beliel's chambers from TWR 1124 to TWR 1178.  Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of Love.
Fourth Millennium: Still infatuated with Beliel after her revival, Basile follows him into exile and ends up in the Hidden Valley. After her experiences in the Hidden Valley, she becomes more outspoken and expressive. She eventually Recognizes Heartseeker when he infiltrates the Hidden Valley to gather information, and returns to New Hope with him. Their daughter is Leelia.
Clearence: Teri Gardner

Betal : (BAY-tul) M, H - dark auburn, E - blue-gray. Lovemate of Tiirz. Superlative glassmaker, mostly sculpture and ornament. Naturally an attractive and gentle, artistic elf, Betal has chosen to lose himself in a bizarre new persona. Usually seen skulking in the halls in a tattered costume and cadaverous makeup; makes a hobby of confusing, startling and disgusting people. Publically decadent, indulging in almost everything to extremes; privately, prefers to spend time working in his studio. Known to the Mraal as the Imagemaker or the Bringer of  Nightmares.
Fourth Millennium: Betal is to some extent healed; exactly how TBD. Clearence: Stephen Arthur

Byern (aka Forge): (by-ern) M, H - light auburn as Byern, bald as Forge; E - pale blue. Son of Challa and Sehr (both D), brother of Ahrien (Fu), Argus (Ms), and Azheri; R mate of Sarafel (D), former lovemate of Cuendee; father of Tariana, Dalesian, and Dis. Once a minor firemaker, now resembles an undersized troll except for skin color. (He is technically not a Functional, but a flesh-shaped elf.) A clever elf with a lively, inquiring mind, sometimes positively devious. Had a tongue like a metal file. A skilled metalsmith and jeweler, a good friend to the trolls.  Convinced by Taywar's death that something was seriously wrong in the Tower, he plotted to escape with some of his troll friends, but was caught and punished by Tyaar. He lives chained to an iron furnace in the main troll cavern, working its bellows, an ever-present reminder to trolls and elves alike of the consequences of disobedience.
Fourth Millennium: Healed to awareness but not (yet) to his original shape.
Clearence: Adoptable

Chenir : (sheh-neer) F, H - red-gold, E - blue. Out-of-Recognition daughter of Wyn (Fu) and Lord Tyaar (though she is held to be the daughter of Wyn and an unknown Outsider), foster daughter of Shadaln, formerly lovemated to Airwolf. Glider. Oversees the human workers under Kesik and Dantum. Firmly squelched from birth, still rather subdued and unsure of herself. Clever, dexterous and witty in private; has an inner core of strength and cunning.  Known to the Mraal as The Nearest or the Handmaid of the Spirits.
Fourth Millennium: Chenir Recognizes and lifemates with Airwolf, relocates to New Hope, where their daughters Kerei (b. TWR 1180) and Spannie (b. TWR 1277) are born. Clearence: Created by Betty Spurlock, Tower NPC, not adoptable

Cort : (kort) M, H - dark brown, E - brown. Son of Orsah (D) and Colin (missing, presumed D), younger brother of Jilleen and Jachin (D).  Lifemate (R) of Jeimi. Father to Goth (OOR) with Tiirz and to Dilan (OOR) and Anja (R) by Jeimi. Poor to mediocre glider. Painter, actor, theatrical makeup artist, set designer/builder. Eccentric; given to guerrilla theater and practical joking (mostly harmless, but still annoying). Irreverent–-sometimes wildly so; impulsively dramatic. Meticulous in his work; has a virtually eidetic visual memory.  Stubborn; has developed passive resistance to a fine art. Fond of his human servants, whom he finds excellent subjects for painting, especially as they age; keeps them around as long as they can totter. In the OS, a shipbuilder and sometime sailor. In Tower remains an avid fisherman. In late Third Mil, worn down by the Tower's Darkening and its effects on his friends, affects a spooky appearance and theatrically morbid personality; his favorite hobby is staging mock suicides. Likes to watch human funerals from afar.
Fourth Mil: Returns to his normal, cheerfully eccentric self.  Known to the Mraal as the Fishing Spirit, Shaping Spirit, and Spirit of the Dead. Clearence: Maggie Fulton

Crystel : (kris-t'l) F, H - tawny blond, E - golden amber. Daughter of Leesa and Ekaren (both D), younger sister of Lyris (D) and Doreel.  Moderate level glider. Dancer, composer, herbalist. Expert at kitar and flute. Recognized in the midst of the Sundering; her intended, Morli, drowned before the Recognition could be consummated. Temperamental and artistic; very passionate. Has little to do with the non-dancers except party with them; her close friends are all in the dance troupe. Blind; lost his sight in an "accident" and Tyaar claimed not to be able to heal the resultant brain injury (a form of revenge -- Dalesian was looking after Wisprian the day she was killed). Dalesian does not truly believe this claim and thus is bitter toward Tyaar; will lend his aid in intrigue against him as long as his involvement remains secret. Has learned to use his other senses to compensate for his loss of sight, but rarely glides anymore.  Was once a Declared  hawkrider, but was forced to give it up after his accident. Lives alone, has few friends despite the esteem given his music; largely indifferent to sex but able to be seduced if he stands to gain something by it. Known to the Mraal as the Little Trickster.

A real straightarrow type; no one in the Tower found it a surprise that he chose to go Functional after his lifemate's death. (In truth, the idea was far more Beliel's than Khepri's; if this were general knowledge, it likely wouldn't surprise anyone either, considering how well they got along.) Known to the Mraal as the Spirit of the Mountain, Tower-Maker; also the Earth-Father or Mountain-Father.
Fourth Millennium: After being revived, Khepri initially relocates to New Hope; once the major rockshaping work there is completed, however, he returns to the Tower in TWR 1215. There she lovemates with Ban again. In TWR 1208 she Recognizes Vaynyar. On the surface charming, gentle, and compassionate; in reality manipulative and cruel. Fond of intrigue, though apolitical for the most part; considers it an art form and delights in destroying others' happiness. Careful to maintain her image as a winning, harmless creature.  Supernally patient. Never talks about her sensing ability; it frightens her and causes her a great many moral conflicts. Tries to do the "right" thing, but not always sure what that may be. Always an inventor, engineer, or as he prefers it, "artificer" of devices both practical and not. (Devised the puzzle lock; performed the engineering for much of the Tower plumbing system; assisted Tanyel in developing the first hawk harnesses; other works to be determined.) A perfectionist with an exacting eye for detail. Loves a challenge. Does not suffer fools gladly and can employ a stinging wit. Enjoys a good bet (within his means) and always pays up; may undertake a project merely to win a bet and prove a point. Has dabbled in numerous arts and crafts. Distraught over his lifemate's death in the !Nekwithr War, hastily concocted a plan to rout the invaders, failed, was captured, and was taken with the retreating humans when Twillor's plan succeeded. Weak and erratic sender. Linguist, with a good ear and an excellent memory for sounds; good mimic. Made an intensive study of the Mraal language and also developed a notation system for spoken sounds. She was with him on his bird when he was shot down and is presumed to have died. Known to the Mraal as the Speaker (of Tongues).
Fourth Millennium: It is revealed that Cuendee is not dead, but since shortly after the escape has been living with a nomadic band of humans, the Shigyeveth (and studying their language, what else?). Lake : (like you'd expect) F, H - white, E - pink with coral pupils.  Outsider. Antihealer. Given to Tyaar in a near-catatonic state in TWR 1118; for reasons of his own Tyaar healed her to awareness but not sanity upon discovering her healer's Talent. Sociopathic, intelligent, devious, arrogant, a dangerous adversary. None understood Tyaar's taking her as a lovemate; he offered her a lifemating, but she turned it down and left the Tower in TWR 1123, desiring to search for "an empire of her own." Known to the Mraal as the White Spirit.
Fourth Millennium: Healed and sane, living at Great Water Holt (where she is known as Dove), she eludes capture by the Torcs in TWR 1178, but voluntarily re-enters the Tower in the guise of Lake in order to rescue her tribefolk (including her R lifemate, Raventongue). She succeeds, but is forced to mortally wound Tyaar in the process. She returns again during the Crisis in TWR 1179 to carry out Tyaar's last wish that she free the Functionals. Dancer, singer, embroiderer, patron of the arts. Gentle, fragile, and shy, feminine and charming; blissfully content to stand in Beliel's shadow. Tended to overdo anything requiring emotional commitment, terribly sentimental, but rather lacking in drive; never overcame her essential timidity. Difficult to excite to violent reaction; walked through life wearing rose-colored spectacles. Subtly witty and an excellent practical joker. Died in TWR 115; believed to have drowned in the bath, actually murdered by Beliel. Clearence: Kathy Coleman

Lyris : (ly-riss) M, H - butter blond, E - dark green. Deceased. Elder brother of Doreel and Crystel; R mate of Silara, father of Doleera. Latent treeshaper. Woodworker, herbalist, beekeeper. Not one to be overawed by status or ability. Passionate about his craft, in his own way, but it didn't rule his life. Loved his lifemate and daughter dearly, troubled by the friction between them. Huntress and warrior, patron of the arts, athlete. Catlike, sensual, quietly vain; capable of deep loyalties to individuals but not of verbalizing her attachments. Valued independence and tended to kick her children out of the nest early; Kiriel was a partial exception. Also made a "pet" of her granddaughter Piri. Perished during the !Nekweth (Outsider human) invasion in TWR 10. Known to the Mraal as the Little Moon Spirit. Clearence: Liz Roth

Nyessti (aka Door): (nyess-tee) F, H - deep chestnut brown, E - ice blue. R mate of Serggyon (Fu), mother of Havrin (Fu), Zareth (Fu), Adaarah and Basile (the latter two out of Recognition). Formerly Functional, now deceased. Rockshaper. Formerly stationed at the back entrance to the Tower. Partly awakened by Lake one day, she realized what had happened to her and, horrified, managed to move far enough to fall from her perch and kill herself. In life sleek, clever, sensual, witty, egotistical, arrogant and vain. A sublime hostess, organized some of the most successful parties in Tower memory. Clearence:

Piet (aka Halfwise): (pyet) M, H - sandy brown, E - brown. Son of Lord Meiron and Lady Periel of the Hidden Valley (both D); half-brother (and soulbrother) of Mikail. Involved in Twillor's escape; he and his companions were never found. Known to the Mraal as the Lovebringer.
Fourth Millennium: Piet returns to the Tower in TWR 1179 along with Mikail, is captured and imprisoned as a "traitor"; these events are the (partial) cause of the overthrow of Beliel and the eventual foundation of New Hope. Piet and his three soulbrothers relocate to New Hope and settle there; he does a good deal of growing up emotionally and eventually lovemates with Rahirah. Clearence: Margaret Dean

First child born in the Tower.  Healer. Musician/singer, liked dancing, sewing. Sweet, kind, friendly, helpful, caring; a bit of an airhead. Could occasionally be very perceptive and discerning. Very nice, but not a pushover. Died during the Third Millennium when a balcony she was stanging on collapsed.  It is fairly certain that Beliel arranged an "accident" for her at Tyaar's behest. Clearence: Gene Breshears

Shaihr : (shay-EER) F, H - black with deep red highlights, E - chestnut brown. Missing, presumed dead. Sister of Silara and Iamoriel, half-sister of Nez; R mate of Daemor (D), mother of Ceyte and Spago. Hunter, weapons expert, fencer, designer; played lute and gitar; painter, excellent actress. High-spirited and proud, fiercely independent, open and honest with her affections. Given to outdoor activities in the first two millennia, she withdrew into gentler artistic pursuits after the !Nekweth invasion, her only social outlet being acting. Became angry when he wasn't chosen as a member of the Declared. Waged a running battle of embarrassments and humiliations with Jand. Vanished from the Tower, rather mysteriously, in TWR 501. Clearence: Gene Breshears

Lady Tascha: (tah-shah) F, H - red, E - green. Missing; fate unknown. Sister of Wyren (D), Clayven (D), and Avensyn; R lifemate of Tyaar, mother of Wisprian (D). Skilled healer. A powerful guiding factor in the shaping of the Tower, very much in love with her lifemate. Quiet of voice.  Descended into madness and left the Tower shortly after the death of her daughter.
Fourth Millennium: After finally being captured and healed in mind at Wolfgang in TWR 1178, Tascha goes on to have an astral showdown with Tyaar, heal him, and depart for the Palace with him. Clearence: Terrie Smith

Taywar : (tay-wahr) M, H - brown, E - dark grey. Deceased. Former Declared. Younger brother of Vayree; R lifemate of Reevirah, father of Vaynyar and Rahirah. Practical, solid, and unimaginative, devoted to his lifemate, his lord, and his tribe. Honest and unsubtle, incapable of intrigue and an easy mark for those who knew what buttons to push. Not stupid, but not an intellectual light; honorable and decent overall, but extremely stubborn. When Reevirah finally got him to see what had gone wrong with Tyaar, Taywar was outraged; he reasoned that since Tyaar could not now be healed, he must be killed. He was prepared to do this himself, secretly, but made the mistake of sounding out various friends about their opinions of Tyaar's sanity. Rahirah (at Vaynyar's instigation) found what he was up to and told Tyaar; at his trial, Taywar committed suicide. Clearence:

Tegwar : (teg-wahr) M, H - black, E - green. Missing, fate unknown. Son of Liera (D) and Beliel, elder brother of Cylan and Piri; R mate of Felimath, father of Kii. Powerful rockshaper; almost as good as Beliel, privately considered himself better. More an engineer than an artist; designed the Tower's plumbing system. Former hunter/ranger; gourmet cook, decent musician. Never got along well with Beliel; close to his grandfather Khepri. Suspicious of the latter's going Functional as well as of his mother's death. Could never understand other Tower elves' paranoia about the Outside. One day in TWR 117 he simply shaped himself a tunnel and walked off into the sunset, never to return.
Fourth
